I went out with Ty to the crafts store to pick up a wind chime that I saw was on sale. While looking around (I knew exactly which one I was going to get, but both Ty and I go distracted by the cool stuff in the store), Ty started ringing the various chimes and describing aloud the garden ornaments, id est, the gnome that is leaning on his shovel and the frog that is sitting indian-style. We picked up our chime and walked to the yarns so that I can look at the crochet hooks and what kind of chunky yarns the store carries. Then we walked to the cash register to purchase our wind chime. While standing in line, Ty saw a box of candies. “Juh. Uh. Nnn. Ih. Ohh. Rrr…”
“Ty, are you reading?” I asked.
“Yea! Mmm. Ih. Nnn. Tuh. Suh. Juh-nih-ohhhhhr… Mints.”
“Oh my gosh, Ty! That’s great! Junior Mints, yea.”
“How old is he?” asked the cashier, who looked young enough to be in college.
“Ty, can you tell Miss Catherine how old you are?” I asked him.
“I’m Ty. T-Y spells Ty.”
“Ty, how old are you? Are you three or four?” I asked him.
“I’m four years old.”
“Oh, nice,” said the cashier.
She was totally impressed by Ty. It impressed her even more to hear that I have two more at home. And what really knocked her socks off was to learn that the kids are homeschooled.
“I’m so totally going to homeschool when I have kids. They are so polite!” To top that, as we were leaving, Ty let me go ahead of him and said, “Go, Mommy. Ladies first!”
