As I was starting a piano lesson, I got a phone call from Husband.
“I’m three for three,” he said. Taylor walked just now. I have it recorded.”

He’s right. He’s three for three. I was working when Ty took his first steps, and Husband recorded them on the digital camera. When Kyle took his first steps, I was teaching a piano lesson as well. I got a text message then. And now I get a phone call from him, telling me that our daughter walked. She looks so cute and so determined as she’s walking. Awwww. :)

Most of the time, it’s the dads who miss the first steps. In our case, it is the mom, or the one who goes out to work more often, who missed the first steps. He was saying that he felt he didn’t deserve to see her walking… but I don’t mind. I told Ms. Kate, my piano student, as we sat down to get our lesson started, that he plays differently with the kids, so it would make sense that they walked for him. I read stories and play pretend and teach them sign language. Dad focuses on physical play.

It’s ironic that Taylor did walk for her dad and not for me, still. I’ve taken her to work with me everyday since she was three weeks old. I would have guessed that she would be taking her first steps during a piano lesson. And the one day that she will be spending more time with Dad than with me, she walks.

What I’m really grateful for is that she walked for her parent and not for a babysitter.
